Opelconazole
Status
DiscontinuedTherapeutic Approach
Anti-Infective
This program studied an inhaled drug (opelconazole) to prevent Aspergillus fungal infections in lung transplant recipients.
There are many challenges associated with current treatment options for people infected with Aspergillus. They may be hard to tolerate, which may lead many patients to discontinue use before they have completed the treatment’s course. Some current treatments may also interact with other common transplant medicines, resulting in potentially serious side effects.
This program studied whether inhaled opelconazole was potentially better tolerated and less likely to have drug-drug interactions.
Status
A Phase 3 study of opelconazole in people with refractory invasive pulmonary aspergillosis was stopped early. The study ended after an initial review of the data showed that participants in the opelconazole arm were less likely to have a positive response to treatment than those in the control arm. No further development in CF is planned at this time.

This program was sponsored by Pulmocide Limited and partially funded by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
